BREAKING: Traffic at a standstill on either side of the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside this evening, with reports of a fire at The Quilted Camel. Emergency services, including fire services, are at the scene.
Update: No injuries have said to have occurred.
No injuries have said to have occured as rhe Newcastle Quayside road and Swing Bridge are currently closed. The Skinnerburn Road close the street from Dean Street to the Quayside is also closed.
Update from Northumbria Police:
“Police officers were called shortly after 5pm today (Wednesday), to support Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service who are tackling a fire at the Quilted Camel on Sandhill.
Fire fighters are still working to extinguish the fire and ask people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
No one is believed to be injured however, the surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a safety precaution and a number of roads have been closed leading to the scene.
The Newcastle Quayside road is currently closed as well as the Swing Bridge. The Close from Skinnerburn Road is also closed as well as the pedestrian street from Dean Street down to the Quayside.
Officers and fire fighters are asking people to avoid the area where possible and use alternate routes.
Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
