As the new year begins and we say farewell to last, let’s take a look at the locations in the North East which have starred on the big and small screen in 2021.

The North East of England is a wonderful part of the world, from the vibrant atmosphere of Newcastle Eldon Square, to the tranquil shores and beaches.

TV and film producers have been keen to showcase the North East last year. Hollywood movies, entertainment shows, and reality TV shows have or will soon be gracing our screens with just a little slice of the North East during 2021.

Here are the most memorable parts of the North East which have blessed our screens during last year.

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh castle was the chosen location of a Hollywood Blockbuster back in June 2021. The castle was lit up with a host of explosions and fire as filming for the new Indiana Jones Movie starring Harrisons Ford took place.

Spectators graced the beach and dunes in view of the castle to watch the movie set be partially engulfed in flames, whilst smoke was also visible emerging from the castle grounds.

The roar of stunt bikes, the sound of guns, and explosions gave an exciting atmosphere to such a fantastic scene.

The movie, set to be released in 2023 stars Harrison Ford, Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, as well as many more.

During the downtime of filming Harrison Ford was spotted cycling along the Northumberland Coast as well as Tyneside.

Alnwick Castle

Alnwick castle is no stranger to Hollywood Movies, and 2021 was no different. Having previously welcomed the Transformers: The Last Knight in 2016, as well as being Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series, it was time for Dungeons and Dragons to set Alnwick alight.

Dungeons and Dragons is set to be released, like the new Indiana Jones Movie, in 2023. It stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant.

Filming took place in May and June 2021 and residents have said that it brought “a real buzz about the place”.

The film is an upcoming American Fantasy Adventure film, based on the vastly popular role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons.

The presenters took an electric caravanning road trip from Berwick to Barnard Castle with several stops in between with Northumberland National Park being one of the most notable.

In the Upper Coquet Valley, the trio completed a chill challenge, described by Paddy McGuinness as his favourite moment of the series.

Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Freddie Flintoffpurchased a Polestar2, an Audi E-tron Sport Back 55 Quattro S-Line and Mercedes EQC400 to complete their conquest to Barnard Castle.

Warkworth Beach

Not a destination in itself but filming for a series 11 of the beloved Geordie detective’s adventures took place in several locations around the North East.

Filming for series 11 of Ann Cleeves’ Vera was spotted in North Shields, Tynemouth, Hexham, Allendale, Corbridge, Washington, and the Port of Sunderland.

In a behind the scenes interview it was revealed that the exterior of Vera’s cottage is on Holy Island, however the interior of her home is a specially created set in Wallsend.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge are also 2 famous landmarks seen during Vera.

The Hairy Bikers Go North

In December 2021 David O’Doherty introduced Mel Giedroyc to the beautiful Northumberland Coast.

They started off in Alnwick’s Barter Books, before cycling along the coast through Alnmouth, Beadnell, and Bamburgh before arriving at their destination of Holy Island.
