Newcastle United travelled to Elland Road to take on Leeds United in a must win game after a Norwich victory against fellow strugglers Watford. Newcastle started with new signing Chris Wood leading the line against a Leeds defence who always look nervous under pressure.

The game was an exciting end to end contest with chances for both sides throughout the game. Paul Dummett who was only starting his second game of the season was taken off and replaced by Javier Manquillo and captain Jamal Lascelles was replaced by Ciaran Clark. Troublesome Saint Maximin clearly caused the hosts problems with his direct running and trickery and showed his frustrations during the game with a clear penalty appeal waved away. The Frenchman booked for arguing with Michael Cavanagh.

A superb Free kick from Jonjo Shelvey low to the left saw the Magpies take the lead and subsequently win the game after a solid display. Newcastle don't play in the league until early February. Manager Eddie Howe is taking the team on a warm weather training camp. The boss will be pleased what he saw from his team today and will take confidence from the display.

The transfer window remains open and the manager will look to strengthen before the return to league action. Newcastle can build on this performance and push for league safety with the travelling toon army in full voice must surely drive the team on and build on this performance.
