Earlier today, Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to a building fire in Blaydon.
A spokesperson for the fire service said at 4.17pm:
"We have five appliances in attendance at a fire at a disused building on Chainbridge Road in Blaydon.
Our aerial ladder platform is also in attendance and there may be some local disruption".
At around 5.46pm, Tyne and Wear Fire & Rescue later tweeted an update:
"A huge well done to our crews who have now got the fire in Blaydon contained.
We have more than 20 firefighters on scene and they will remain at the scene tonight.
Due to the smoke we would continue to ask residents in the area to keep windows and doors closed."
