With both Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC playing this weekend, on 4th December, Gateshead Council have issued a statement regarding travel in the local area.

In a statement, Gateshead Council have said

“Please be aware that roads in Gateshead town centre and the surrounding area, including river crossings, are expected to be very busy tomorrow, Saturday 4th December and Sunday 5th December.

The Tyne Tunnels operator is closing the northbound tunnel for maintenance from 10pm tonight (3/12) until 4am on Monday (6/12). Roadworks are also in place on the A1 around Newcastle and Gateshead as widening work continues.

Both #NUFC and #SAFC have home matches at 3pm on Saturday afternoon, and Newcastle city centre and the Metrocentre are likely to be busy with Christmas shoppers.

If you need to travel, please plan your journey in advance, use public transport, walk or cycle wherever possible, or if you must use your car, consider whether you can car share with family or friends.”
