LATEST UPDATE – LABOUR LEADER KEIR STARMER
Labour Leader Keir Starmer is urging the public to stick to the rules this festive season to avoid the NHS becoming overwhelmed.
“At times like this, we must all put the national interest first and play by the rules, of course, I understand that sticking to the rules can be inconvenient but stick to the rules we must. It would be easy to let the festivities we’ve all been looking forward to, divert us from our national duty.” He said.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a speech in which the booster vaccine programme was brought forward to try and help tackle the Omicron varient.
All eligible adults available for a booster vaccine from today.
However, NHS has advised to book later tonight, as thousands try to book their boosters online.
Johnson addressed the nation on the booster roll out.
“I’m afraid we’re now facing an emergency in our battle with the new variant Omicron,” said Mr Johnson.
“It is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need. But the good news is that our scientists are confident that with a third dose, a booster dose, we can all bring our level of protection back up”.
“At this point our scientists cannot say that Omicron is less severe.
“And even if that proved to be true, we already know it is so much more transmissible that a wave of Omicron through a population that was not boosted would risk a level of hospitalisation that could overwhelm our NHS and lead sadly to very many deaths.”
Other points to note:
- 42 military planning teams to be deployed across every region to help
- opening hours of booster sites extended with more appointments
- extra vaccine sites and mobile units will be set up across England
- thousands of new volunteer vaccinators will be trained
The conference comes after new restrictions were brought back in from Monday 13th December.
From today, you’ll be advised to work from home if you can. You will also need to show an NHS Covid pass to be able to enter nightclubs and venues with higher capacity. Your pass will still be valid if you have had two doses of the Covid vaccine although this will be kept under review.
Other restrictions have already been reintroduced, for example, face coverings are now mandatory in most indoor venues, including theatres and cinemas although not required when drinking, exercising or singing.
